Dr Mary Hunter is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and Contemporary Research in Islamabad, working on decolonisation in UK-Pakistan relations. She completed her doctorate at the University of St Andrews in 2024 on Zia’s Islamisation of Pakistan and its impact on religious minorities, in the context of the influence of Maulana Maududi and British colonialism. Dr Hunter regularly contributes articles to newspapers and think tanks, particularly on topics relating to Pakistan, minorities and Islamophobia.

This topic addresses the need to re-evaluate and transform the historical and political connections between the UK, Pakistan, and India in light of decolonization. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing past injustices and moving towards a more equitable and respectful partnership. The focus is on how past colonial practices continue to shape current relations and how both nations can work towards a future that honors their sovereignty and cultural identities.
